University of Oklahoma campusBridges to College Math, Science and Engineering

July 20-25, 2008

This academy offers a summer session providing students entering their junior or senior year in the fall with hands-on experience in the basic areas of mathematics that reinforce the college study of physics, engineering and mathematics.

Areas covered include probability, logic, statistics and calculus. Directed by Dr. Richard Neal, the classes will emphasize the use of extensive symbolic notation required to represent mathematical ideas.

In each week-long session, students move from concrete examples to more abstract ones using hands-on methods. Students extend the notation from the concrete cases in ways to represent the more abstract ones. They will compare and contrast the use of technology for undergraduate physics, math and science students.

Twenty students will be selected. During the session students reside in university residence halls on the campus in Norman, Oklahoma. Students who will enter their junior or senior year in the fall are eligible to apply.
