OU Summer Academies

Summer Academy camps for students 8th through 12th grade in fall of 2012

The OU Summer Academies provide students with hands-on experiences in Math, Science, Engineering and Technology while exposing them to life on a college campus.

All expenses including room (except Sky High), board, supplies and books will be provided for each academy student. Travel expenses to and from the academy location and incidental personal expenditures are the responsibility of the academy student.

Dates: Session I: July 1-13, 2012

Session II: July 15-27, 2012

Available to: Rising 9th through 12th grade Oklahoma students

Location: OU Biological Station, Lake Texoma

 

Thirty (30) students will be accepted for each session.  Students must submit application, student essay and two recommendation letters.  Please refer to student application for specific guidelines.

The OU Summer Academy, Field Studies in Multidisciplinary Biology, focuses on two disciplines in the life sciences, botany and zoology. Students will study organisms in their natural habitats and participate in lectures and discussions on research methodology, the philosophy of science, ethics in science and laboratory based experiences, attend seminars on designing field projects. Students will participate in extensive field studies utilizing nature as the "classroom".

Dates: June 24-29, 2012

Available to: Rising 11th and 12th grade Oklahoma students

Location: OU Norman Campus

Thirty (30) students will be accepted.  Students must submit application, student essay and two recommendation letters.  Please refer to student application for specific guidelines.

The Going Green Summer Academy offers a one-week opportunity to study the process for “designing and building green” within the five built environment programs in the University of Oklahoma’s College of Architecture.  Students will be exposed to all five areas of study including Architecture, Interior Design, Construction Science, Landscape Architecture and Regional and City Planning.

Twenty-five (25) students will be accepted for each session.  Students must submit application, grades, student essay and two recommendation letters.  Please refer to student application for specific guidelines.

Bridges to College Math, Science and Engineering Summer Academy will provide students with hands-on experience in some basic areas of mathematics that undergird the college study of physics, engineering and mathematics.  These areas include probability, logic, statistics and calculus.  The academy will emphasize the use of extensive symbolic notation required to represent mathematical ideas.  In each week-long session, students move from concrete examples to more abstract ones in those areas of math using hands-on methods.  They will compare the use of technology for undergraduate physics, math and science students at OU.

Available to:      Rising 8th and 9th grade Oklahoma students

Location:           OU Max Westheimer Airport, Norman

 

Thirty (30) students will be accepted.  Students must submit application, student essay and two recommendation letters.  Please refer to student application for specific guidelines.

The Sky High Academy is designed to give students an experiential learning opportunity in the field of aviation and aeronautical engineering.  This program will be hands-on which will expand each student’s problem solving skills and ignite an interest in science and technology.  All activities will activate higher order thinking skills and increase the student’s decision making and critical thinking skills while building self confidence.  Students will explore the math and science behind aviation through hands-on learning.

POSTMARK APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR SUMMER ACADEMIES IS APRIL 23, 2012.

Applicants will be mailed written notification on the status of the application no later than May 4.  Only complete applications will be considered.
