ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp
During the summer of 2008, The University of Oklahoma, The Harris
Foundation and the ExxonMobil Foundation will hold Earth Cycles, an
academic camp for Native American and other underrepresented middle
school students entering grades 6-8 in the Fall. Earth Cycles provides
these students the opportunity to explore the challenges and rewards of
study and life on a major university campus.
Academics
Earth Cycles provids Native American and other underrepresented middle
school students the opportunity to study the geosciences through a core curriculum
based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education. Students
participate in class discussions, perform lab research and computer work, go
on field trips and much more which shows them the connection between the
science concepts of the origin of rocks and minerals and the Native American “Sacred
Circle.” They are instructed by University of Oklahoma faculty and outstanding
secondary teachers.

Earth Cycles will be held for two
weeks, June 8-20, 2008 on The University of Oklahoma’s
main campus in Norman, Oklahoma. Students return home for the weekend. Fifty students will be accepted into the camp.
Residential Life
Students live in a residence hall on the OU campus and meals are served in Couch
Cafeteria which is a state-of-the art cafeteria with all-you-can-eat meal offerings for any
student’s diet requirements. Students are supervised in the residence hall by adult
counselors who lived on the same floor in order to provide maximum assistance and
supervision.
Costs
All expenses, including room, board, supplies, books, field trips and recreational activity
expenses are provided for each Earth Cycles’ student accepted. Travel to and from the
camp location and incidental personal expenditures are the responsibility of the camp
participant.
